Behind the Camera: A Child of Science

Behind the scenes at the photoshoot for A Child of Science with Tom Felton, Meg Bellamy, Jamie Glover, Adelle Leonce and Sonoya Mizuno. The play starts June 5.

In 1978, Patrick Steptoe, Robert Edwards, and Jean Purdy changed the world as we know it – and most people don’t even know their names.

Bruntwood Prize-winning writer Gareth Farr’s brilliant new play tells their pioneering story, and those of the army of women from all over the UK whose immense bravery helped them achieve the impossible – to create human life in vitro.

Faced with fierce criticism and hostility, and hounded by the media for “playing God”, trials were kept largely under wraps. But their determination to give hope to the thousands of families struggling to conceive eventually led to one of the most remarkable medical breakthroughs of our time: the birth of a baby girl and the creation of IVF, a procedure which has supported the birth of over 12 million babies worldwide over the last 45 years.

Directed by the highly acclaimed West End director Matthew Dunster (Hangmen2:22 A Ghost StoryShirley Valentine) and starring Tom Felton (Harry Potter), Jamie Glover (Waterloo RoadCasualty), Meg Bellamy (The Crown), Adelle Leonce (Fool Me OnceBlack Mirror), Sonoya Mizuno (House of the Dragon), and more, A Child of Science is about determination, dreams, hope, and courage. It’s a celebration of life.

A Child of Science World Premiere

Bristol Old Vic has unveiled full casting for its upcoming world premiere of Gareth Farr’s A Child of Science, set to be led by Harry Potter film star Tom Felton, as previously announced. Performances will begin June 5 at the U.K. theatre with opening night set for June 11. The run will continue through July 6.

Felton will star as Robert Edwards, one of the doctors that helped pioneer the practice of IVF in fertility treatment. He will be joined by Jamie Glover as Patrick Steptoe, Meg Bellamy as Jean Purdy, Adelle Leonce as Margaret, Sonoya Mizuno as Lillian Lincoln Howell, and Sheena Steptoe. The company will also include Saikat Ahamed, Gruffudd Glyn, Bobby Hirston, Amy Loughton, Bebe Sanders, and Everal A Walsh.

Matthew Dunster is directing the new work, which tracks the creation of the revolutionary treatment. The project is personal for both Dunster and Farr, both of whom had children via IVF.

The production will feature scenic design by Anna Fleischle, costume design by Angelica Rush, lighting design by Sally Ferguson, sound design by Holly Khan, music by Genevieve Dawson, video design by Gino Ricardo Green, and hair and make-up design by Zoë Louise Gale. Casting is by Matilda James.
