Tom Felton to lead Sara Sugarman’s Save The Cinema

Jonathan Pryce, Samantha Morton and Tom Felton will star in Save The Cinema, a feature drama about the campaign to save a local cinema in Carmarthen, Wales in the 1990s, which is now shooting in Wales.

The film is directed by Sara Sugarman, whose previous features includes Mad Cows (1999), Very Annie Mary (2001), Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen (2004) and Vinyl (2012).

The film is co-produced by Sky and FAE Film & Television. Sky has majority-financed the title as a Sky Original film, with additional backing from Phil Hunt’s Head Gear Films, Film Cymru and Lipsync. Producers are Karl Hall and Matt Williams for FAE, and Piers Tempest, with Julia Stuart at Sky as executive producer.

Piers Ashworth (Blithe Spirit, Fisherman’s Friends, St. Trinian’s) has written the script from a story by Welsh writer Lorraine King. The film is aiming to release in cinemas and via Sky Cinema towards the end of 2021.

Save The Cinema tells the true story of Liz Evans, a hairdresser and leader of a youth theatre in Carmarthen, Wales, who began a campaign in 1993 to save the Lyric theatre from closure. Alongside then Mayor of Carmarthen Richard Goodridge (the film changes this role to a local councilor), they enlisted the help of Steven Spielberg, securing a special premiere of Jurassic Park.

Supporting cast includes Adeel Akhtar, Susan Wokoma, Erin Richards, Owain Yeoman, Colm Meaney, Rhod Gilbert and Keith Allen.

Tom joins Giles Borg’s ‘Lead Heads’

Rupert Everett, Derek Jacobi and Tom Felton have joined the ensemble cast of “Lead Heads,” described as a “drama about greed and the repercussions it has on the soul.” Also in the cast are Luke Newberry, Mark Williams and Olatunji Ayofe. Giles Borg directs. Principal photography begins in March in London.

The film centers on “a group of men, strangers to one another but all corrupted by greed, who, in their desperation, are drawn together for one night to play a game that may cost them both their souls and lives,” according to a statement from the producers, Lawrence Steven Meyers, Randy Dannenberg and John Evangelides.

Alexa Waugh is onboard to line produce. The script was written by Patrick Makin.

Tom to Host the British Independent Film Awards

The British Independent Film Awards — best known as the BIFAs — has set a date and host for its postponed 2020 ceremony, pushed back and shifted online due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The ceremony, which usually takes place in early December, is now set to take place on Feb. 18, with Tom Felton — best known for playing Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter film franchise — on hosting duties.

The ceremony, being live-streamed on the BIFA Facebook page, will see Felton host live from Wales (where he’s currently filming the Sky original film Save the Cinema with Jonathan Pryce, Samantha Morton and Susan Wokoma), with winners announced during what organizers are describing as a “fun and freewheeling 45-minute program”. Alongside winner presentations, the show will feature live chats with jurors and famous film fans about this year’s crop of nominees.

“British film has been part of my life for as long as I can remember and now, more than ever, it is so important to support, recognize and celebrate those brilliant creatives who make them,” said Felton. “Film brings us all together and I’m delighted to be hosting this year’s British Independent Film Awards.”
